The Acme Haversack of

Song and Patriotic Eloquence

In our collection of artifacts there is a booklet entitled “Acme Haversack Song and Patriotic Eloquence”.  This was a periodical published twice each month, filled with patriotic poetry, stories and songs.  This issue of the Acme Haversack we have is Volume 5, Number 2 published March 1891.  It was dedicated entirely to women’s patriotism.  There are entries specific to other female patriotic Orders, but the greatest percentage is devoted to the WRC.  Songs named “The Sacrifice That Woman Gave” and  “We Greet the W.R.C.” are set to the tune of “Union”.   One song entitled “You Don’t Have A Corps?” has the verse:

As a mast without a sail

As a boat without oar,

As a kite without a tail

So’s a Post without a Corps

There are articles and poems dedicated to Army Nurses.   One article entitled “A Soldier’s Views Regarding the W.R.C.,” a GAR man writes “The history of our civil war will not be complete till future generations shall read in its pages the work of loving woman…and read also the loving aid of the Woman’s Relief Corps. May Heaven’s richest blessings rest upon you and reward you.”
